A few weeks ago I was driving and Another One Bites the Dust came on the radio. If you know the song, you know the bassline — it's one of the most recognizable in rock history, and it carries the entire track from start to finish. Listening to it, I started thinking about what makes that bass sound so distinctive. The thump, the warmth, the way it sits so perfectly in the mix without ever getting in the way of anything else.
That got me wondering whether I could use Logic Pro's Stem Splitter and Match EQ to get my own bass track on Camaro 67's Late Night closer to that sound. The answer turned out to be yes — and the process revealed a technique that works on any instrument, not just bass. In this post I'll walk through exactly how it works.
What You Need to Know Before You Start
This technique uses two built-in Logic Pro tools working together. The first is Stem Splitter, which uses machine learning to separate a mixed audio recording into individual instrument stems. The second is Match EQ, which analyzes the frequency content of two audio sources and generates an EQ curve that makes one sound more like the other.
Used together, they give you a practical way to study the tonal character of any recording and apply it to your own tracks. It won't copy every element of a sound — the playing style, the instrument itself, the recording environment — but it will get your EQ curve into the same ballpark, which is often exactly what you need as a starting point.
Step One — Isolate the Instrument With Stem Splitter
The first step is to get a clean, isolated version of the instrument you want to reference. In this case that meant pulling the bass out of the Queen recording so I could analyze it on its own without the guitars, drums, and vocals colouring the result.
To do this, import a clip of the reference track into your Logic session. You don't need the whole song — a section where the instrument is prominent is plenty. Right-click on the region, go to Processing, then Stem Splitter. Select the stem type you want to isolate (in this case Bass) and hit Apply. Logic will process the file and create a new track containing just that isolated element.
The quality of the separation depends on the source material. With a well-produced commercial recording where the bass has its own clear space in the mix, Stem Splitter does a very good job. You'll likely hear some minor artefacts if you listen closely, but for the purpose of using it as a reference for Match EQ it's more than accurate enough.
Step Two — Load Match EQ on Your Track
With the isolated stem sitting in your session, go to your own instrument track — in this case the bass from Late Night — and load the Match EQ plugin. You'll find it under the EQ section in Logic's audio effect browser.
Match EQ has two analysis inputs: Current and Reference. Current is where you drop in your own track, and Reference is where you drop in the material you want to match. The plugin analyzes the frequency content of each and then shows you the difference between them as an EQ curve.
To use it, make sure Current is selected and drag your own audio region onto the plugin window. Logic will scan the track and display its average EQ curve. Then switch to Reference and drag in your isolated stem from the Stem Splitter. Logic scans that as well, and then when you switch to the EQ Curve to Match view, you see the calculated difference — the precise EQ adjustments needed to bring your track closer to the reference.
What the Curve Showed
In this case the Match EQ curve showed a boost in the low end, cuts in the upper mids, a boost around 5kHz, and another cut at the very top of the frequency range. That pattern makes intuitive sense when you think about the Queen bass sound — warm and full in the lows, less aggressive in the upper mids, with just enough presence in the upper harmonics to cut through without being harsh.
Comparing the before and after was immediately noticeable. With the curve turned off the Late Night bass had more attack and bite to it. With the curve applied it became warmer, rounder, and noticeably closer to that classic recorded sound.
Smoothing and the Apply Slider
Match EQ gives you two controls worth paying attention to once the curve is generated. The first is Smoothing, which controls how precisely the EQ curve follows the difference between the two sources. At low smoothing values the curve is very detailed and follows every small frequency variation. At higher smoothing values it becomes more of a broad, general shape. For most applications I prefer more smoothing — it gives you the character of the reference without over-processing the track in ways that can start to sound unnatural.
The second is the Apply slider, which controls how much of the calculated curve gets applied to your track. At 0% you're hearing your original sound. At 100% you're hearing the full Match EQ treatment. In practice, somewhere between 50% and 80% often gives the most musical result — you're moving toward the reference without completely erasing what made your original recording sound good in the first place.
For Late Night, I landed on a smoothed curve applied at a level that brought the warmth and roundness of the reference without losing the feel of the original performance. Blending it back in with the drums confirmed it was sitting better in the mix than before.
Applying This to Any Instrument
The same process works on any instrument where EQ is a significant part of the tone. Vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, drums — if there's a recording you admire and want to use as a tonal reference, Stem Splitter can isolate the relevant part and Match EQ can analyze it.
One thing worth being clear about: Match EQ addresses frequency content only. It won't replicate compression characteristics, harmonic distortion, room sound, or playing dynamics. If you're trying to match a heavily overdriven electric guitar and you're starting with a clean signal, the EQ curve will get you closer but you'll still need to work on the tone separately. Think of Match EQ as a very smart starting point rather than a complete solution.
That said, for instruments where tone is primarily a function of EQ — bass being a good example — it can get you surprisingly close with very little effort.
Why This Is Worth Adding to Your Workflow
For musicians who mix their own recordings, one of the hardest things to develop is a reliable reference point for what a well-mixed instrument should sound like. Listening to commercial recordings helps, but translating what you hear into specific EQ moves takes time and experience. Match EQ essentially does that translation for you — it looks at a recording you admire and tells you exactly what EQ adjustments would bring your track closer to it.
Used thoughtfully, it's a genuinely useful shortcut. Not a replacement for developing your ears, but a tool that helps you move faster and make more informed decisions when you're in the middle of a mix.
