We're continuing our series following the recording and mixing of Late Night by Camaro 67, and this time it's keys. So far in this series we've mixed drums, bass, guitars, and horns, with congas and additional percussion still to come after this. Before getting into the specifics, it's worth hearing the transformation. With everything muted, the keys sound flat and narrow. With the full chain applied, EQ, compression, reverb, delay, and some stereo widening, they take on real space and definition in the mix.
Why the Keys Were Recorded as Two Mono Tracks
Before getting into processing, it's worth explaining a recording decision that shapes everything else in this video. The keys were intentionally recorded as two separate mono tracks, one for the left channel and one for the right, rather than as a single stereo track.
Recording to a single stereo track is simpler to manage, since there's only one track to deal with during editing and mixing. But it comes with a real downside: there's no independent fader for each side, which makes it much harder to correct any imbalance between the left and right channels after the fact. Recording to two separate mono tracks costs a bit of extra organization up front, but it means each channel can be balanced independently at the mixing stage.
This turned out to be worth doing here. The gain wasn't perfectly matched between the left and right channels during recording, which is common when you're moving quickly to get everyone set up in a session. With two independent mono tracks, that imbalance is easy to correct later: simply adjust one fader relative to the other until both channels sound level. If this had been recorded as a single stereo track, that correction wouldn't have been possible without a channel-specific EQ or gain plugin working around the limitation.
The keys themselves, played on a Nord Electro, were recorded direct via a patch cable straight into the audio interface. No amp, no microphone, no room bleed. This keeps the signal completely clean and free of any spill from other instruments, which simplifies everything at the mixing stage. If you're short on available channels, recording a keyboard in mono is a perfectly reasonable option. But recording in stereo, as two channels, captures the natural width of the instrument itself, since a keyboard's own stereo patch already spreads different frequencies across the left and right sides.
Balancing the Two Channels
With both mono tracks in the session, the first job before any processing was making sure the left and right channels were sitting at an even level relative to each other. Bringing both faders to the exact same position actually created an imbalance, since the recorded gain wasn't identical between the two. The fix is straightforward: nudge one fader relative to the other until the two channels sound properly balanced by ear, rather than assuming matching fader positions means a matching level.
To keep both mono tracks easy to work with as a single unit going forward, they were grouped into a track stack. Select both tracks, right-click, and choose Create Track Stack. This creates a single collapsible track, renamed here simply to Keys, that can be shown or hidden as needed. From this point forward, all further processing is applied directly to this track stack, which functions from here on exactly like a single stereo track.
Adding Warmth With the Tape Machine
The first plugin in the chain is a virtual tape machine, used here the same way it's been used on other instruments throughout this series: to add a subtle sense of analog warmth. The effect is deliberately understated rather than dramatic, mostly bringing out a bit more low end and giving the signal a slightly warmer overall character. The settings used here follow a consistent pattern across this series: the 2-inch tape setting, 15 IPS speed, and the FG-456 tape type.
Console Emulation and Compression
Next is the virtual mix rack, a modular plugin that bundles several processing tools into one interface, the same tool used throughout this series for guitars and horns.
The first module is a virtual console channel, set here to the Brit N option, which emulates a Neve-style analog console. As with the tape machine, this is a subtle effect, adding a bit more low-end warmth rather than dramatically reshaping the tone.
Compression comes next, using FG-Stress, a compressor modeled after the classic Distressor hardware unit. Unlike most compressors, this one has no dedicated threshold control. Instead, the amount of compression is driven entirely by how much input signal you feed it: more input means more gain reduction, and the output control is then used to bring the overall level back to where it needs to be. In this case, compression was set to catch peaks around 3 dB of gain reduction, though in practice most of the signal only saw about 1 to 2 dB, with louder moments occasionally reaching closer to 3. This is a genuinely light touch of compression, aimed at gently evening things out rather than aggressively controlling the dynamics.
Shaping the Tone With EQ
The final module in the mix rack is a Neve-style EQ, and this is where most of the real tonal shaping happens. A low cut was applied at 120 Hz, along with a boost around 987 Hz, another small boost at 3 kHz, and a gentle high shelf.
Of these moves, the low cut is doing the most audible work. The particular keyboard patch used here, a swirling, textured sound, carries a fair amount of low-end content on its own. Left unchecked, that low end would compete directly with the bass guitar and kick drum for the same frequency space. Filtering it out reserves that low-end territory for the instruments that actually need it, while the keys themselves lose nothing essential, since the low end wasn't a defining part of this particular sound to begin with.
A revival plugin was also added, using just a touch of shimmer to add a bit more high-end sparkle. It's worth mentioning that Logic Pro's own Channel EQ also appears in this session, but purely as a scanning tool used earlier to help identify these frequencies. It isn't contributing anything to the final sound and was switched off once the actual EQ moves were made in the Neve module.
Widening the Stereo Image With Spreader
With the tone shaped, the next step was adding further stereo width using Logic Pro's Spreader plugin. This tool pushes the left and right sides of a stereo signal further apart, creating a wider sense of space without needing to change the actual panning.
A few specific settings were used to keep this widening controlled and musical rather than excessive. The lower frequencies, anything below 300 Hz, were left completely unaffected, since bass content generally benefits from staying centered and focused rather than being spread wide. Above that point, frequency-dependent widening was applied: the lower-mid frequencies were widened by around 30%, while the higher frequencies received a stronger widening effect. The overall intensity was also kept below maximum, since the goal was a noticeably wider sound rather than an extreme, possibly unnatural one. This kind of restraint matters: over-widening a stereo signal can create phase problems and cause a mix to fall apart when played back in mono, so a moderate setting that still sounds good in mono is the safer target.
Adding Space With Two Reverbs and Stereo Delay
The final stage of processing focused on adding depth and space, following the same layered approach used on guitars and horns earlier in this series.
The first reverb is a plate setting at 1.8 seconds, the same plate reverb already used on the horns and guitars elsewhere in this mix, which helps keep a consistent sense of space across different instruments. A second reverb, a longer 4-second hall setting, adds a more distant, lingering trail in the background, applied more subtly than the plate reverb so it doesn't overwhelm the more immediate sense of space the plate provides.
A stereo delay was also added, the same type used on the guitars earlier in the series. Beyond adding rhythmic interest, the delay contributes meaningfully to the overall sense of width, reinforcing the widening work already done with the Spreader plugin.
Together, these three elements, reverb, hall reverb, and delay, give the keys a genuinely spacious, wide character. This is an intentional choice tied to the arrangement itself: for most of this song, the keys are playing a fairly static rhythmic pattern rather than a prominent melodic line, aside from a brief solo section. Pushing that rhythmic pattern wider and further to the sides keeps it from crowding the center of the mix, leaving that central space free for the horns, which carry more of the melodic focus in this arrangement.
Blending With the Full Mix
With the keys fully processed, the final step was bringing them into the mix alongside the rest of the band. Following the same practice used throughout this series, this meant listening in context rather than relying purely on how the keys sounded in isolation, checking the blend against drums, bass, and guitars first, then bringing the horns back in as well to confirm everything sat together properly.
