How to Master Your Music in Logic Pro Using Built-In Presets

Mastering can feel like one of the more intimidating stages of finishing a song, but Logic Pro makes it genuinely approachable thanks to a set of built-in mastering presets you can use as a starting point. In this post I'll walk through how to use these presets, which settings actually matter, and how to get your track to a loudness level that works well for streaming platforms like Spotify.

Why Mastering Matters

One of the main goals of mastering is making sure your track doesn't sound too quiet or too loud compared to other commercially released music. If your track is too quiet, it can come across as lacking energy or impact next to other songs. If it's too loud, you risk introducing distortion, which doesn't sound good either. Mastering is how you find that balance.

Before doing anything, it helps to know how much headroom you're working with. Press play on your mix and watch your master bus meter. If your loudest peak sits around -5.6 dB, for example, that means you have 5.6 dB of headroom before you hit 0 dB and start clipping. That headroom is what mastering plugins will use to bring your track up to a competitive, appropriate loudness level.

Understanding the Master Bus

Mastering in Logic Pro means applying plugins to your master bus, the single channel that every track in your session eventually passes through. If you open your mixer, you'll see that your drums, bass, vocals, and every other instrument are all routed to Stereo Out. Because of this, anything you place on the master bus affects your entire mix at once, not just one individual element.

Loading a Mastering Preset

Logic Pro includes a collection of mastering presets built as channel strip presets specifically for the master bus. To access them, select your master output in the mixer, go to Settings at the top, then Factory, where you'll find a list of presets to choose from. There are also some additional metering tools and mastering plugins available under Legacy, along with some GarageBand-originated presets.

You can also reach these same presets through the Library panel, opened with the small icon in the top left or by pressing the letter Y. If you're just starting out, it's worth auditioning a handful of these presets against your own track to hear how each one shapes the sound. As you scroll through options like Add Low End Density, you'll notice each preset loads a slightly different combination of plugins onto your master bus, typically some mix of a compressor, an exciter, an EQ, a multi-band compressor, and a limiter.

Once you find a preset that feels like a reasonable starting point, don't treat it as finished. Presets are a foundation, not a final result, and there are a few key settings within any preset worth dialing in specifically for your song.

The Compressor

A good starting preset to work from is Broadcast Ready, since it's one of the simpler options in the list. Begin by turning off every plugin the preset loaded, then bring them back in one at a time, starting with the compressor.

Since every track in your mix is already passing through this master bus compressor, and you've likely already applied some compression on your individual tracks during mixing, you don't want to over-compress here. Press play and adjust the threshold so you're only seeing around 1 to 2 dB of gain reduction on the meter. It's also worth checking the Auto Gain and Makeup Gain settings. Many engineers prefer turning Auto Gain off, so Logic Pro isn't automatically compensating the volume for you, and setting Makeup Gain to zero for now, adding gain back in manually later if needed. This kind of gentle master bus compression is meant to subtly glue your mix together, not reshape it.

The EQ

The same restraint applies to EQ on the master bus. Since every track passes through here, this isn't the place for drastic boosts or cuts. If something needs real correction, that fix belongs back at the mixing stage on the individual track. What you're doing here is more like a final polish: perhaps a subtle boost of air in the very high frequencies, a gentle cut somewhere else, and a roll-off of anything below around 25 Hz that isn't contributing anything useful to the mix.

Toggle the EQ on and off while listening to hear whether it's genuinely improving your mix. If it is, keep it subtle. If you're already happy with your mix as it stands, there's nothing wrong with leaving this plugin bypassed entirely.

The Multiband Compressor

Many mastering presets also include a multiband compressor, which lets you compress different frequency ranges independently, essentially acting like several compressors working together across different parts of the frequency spectrum. You can adjust the threshold for each band individually if you want more targeted control. That said, if you've already applied compression earlier in the chain and feel your mix doesn't need additional shaping, it's completely reasonable to leave this one bypassed as well.

The Exciter

An exciter adds harmonic content based on a specific frequency range you set, which can bring extra clarity and presence to elements like snare drums and hi-hats. Toggle it on and off to hear the difference, and keep it if it's adding a pleasing bit of crispness without becoming harsh or fatiguing.

The Limiter

The final and arguably most important plugin in the chain is the limiter, sometimes labeled as the Adaptive Limiter. This has two key settings: Gain, which adds volume into your track, and Out Ceiling, which sets the absolute maximum level your track is allowed to reach.

Where you set your out ceiling depends on where your music is headed. For music being pressed to CD, a ceiling of 0 dB is common. These days, most music is being uploaded to streaming platforms, and most of those platforms prefer a ceiling around -1 dB.

Targeting the Right Loudness for Streaming

Spotify publishes clear guidance on this topic. To keep the volume consistent across different artists and songs on their platform, they apply loudness normalization, adjusting tracks that are too loud down and tracks that are too quiet up. According to their published mastering recommendations, they target an integrated loudness of -14 LUFS and recommend keeping your true peak below -1 dB. That -1 dB true peak figure is exactly what your limiter's out ceiling should be set to if you're mastering primarily for Spotify.

To hit that -14 LUFS target accurately, you'll need one more tool: a loudness meter. Add this as the very last plugin in your master bus chain, after the limiter, since its job is purely to measure your output level, not to change the sound in any way. Once loaded, you can visually set a target line at -14 on the meter to give yourself a clear reference point.

Press play and hit the Start button on the loudness meter to begin measuring your integrated LUFS value. This integrated reading is the average loudness across your listening period, and you'll also see separate Momentary and Short-Term readings alongside it, which reflect real-time and slightly longer-term loudness respectively. If your integrated reading comes back at, say, -18 LUFS, you know you need to add gain on your limiter to bring the track up closer to -14. Make an adjustment, listen again, and refine from there until you land close to your target.

One important detail: make sure you measure loudness across your entire song, not just the loudest section. It's easy to check only the big chorus or bridge, but streaming platforms measure the integrated loudness of the whole track from start to finish, so your gain setting needs to reflect that full picture.

Different Platforms, Different Targets

It's worth knowing that every streaming service handles loudness normalization slightly differently. Some will bring your track's volume down if it's too loud, others will boost it if it's too quiet, and the exact target loudness varies platform to platform. A useful approach is to decide which platform matters most for your release and master specifically to that platform's published recommendations.

There are also free tools online, such as the Loudness Penalty website, that let you upload your finished track and see exactly how different platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music would each normalize your file. Some platforms may reduce your volume slightly, while others, like Pandora, might actually increase it. Seeing this comparison can help you understand how your specific master will translate across different listening environments before you commit to a final version.
