How to Record Electric Guitar in Logic Pro Using Amp Designer
If you want to record electric guitar without setting up a real amplifier and microphone, Logic Pro's Amp Designer plugin gives you a genuinely convincing alternative. You plug your guitar straight into your audio interface, put on a pair of headphones, and you can dial in anything from a clean tone to full distortion without waking up the house or the neighbours. In this post I'll walk through the full process, from setting up your track to recording your first take.
Setting Up Your Track
The first step is creating a track to record your guitar on. Logic Pro gives you two options here: a standard audio track, the same kind you'd use for recording vocals, or a dedicated Guitar or Bass track, which comes preloaded with tone presets. Starting from a basic audio track is a good way to understand exactly how everything is built before relying on presets, so that's the approach covered here.
Before creating the track, make sure your audio input and output devices are set correctly in Logic Pro's preferences, pointing to your audio interface. This is where your guitar will be physically plugged in. If your interface isn't showing up as an option, open your audio preferences and select it manually as your input and output device.
While you're in there, it's worth checking your I/O buffer size. When you're recording, you generally want a smaller buffer size, since this reduces latency, the small delay between playing a note and hearing it back through your speakers or headphones. At a buffer size of around 128, you might see a round trip latency of roughly 10 milliseconds, which feels essentially instant. Push that buffer size up to 1024 and that same latency can jump to over 50 milliseconds, which becomes very noticeable and makes it much harder to play in time. A good starting point for recording is 128 or 256. Just be aware that the lower the number, the harder your computer has to work, so if you start hearing glitches or artifacts, that's your cue to raise the buffer size slightly.
Once your input and output devices are confirmed, create your audio track. Set the input to the specific channel your guitar is plugged into rather than a stereo pair, since you're only recording a single mono signal. One thing worth knowing: most audio interfaces have combo jacks on the front, meaning the same input can accept both an XLR microphone cable and a standard guitar patch cable. If your interface looks like this, you can have a microphone and guitar both connected at once on separate channels.
After creating the track, rename it something clear like Electric Guitar, and if you'd like, right click the track icon and choose a guitar icon from the list so it's easy to identify at a glance in a busy session.
Setting Your Levels and Tuning Up
With your guitar plugged in, enable record on the track and play a chord to check your input level. You're aiming for somewhere between about -18 and -10 on the meter. This range gives you a healthy, usable signal while still leaving headroom in case you play harder than expected and risk peaking. If your level is too quiet, increase the gain on your audio interface. If you're hitting the red and clipping, turn that gain down.
Once your level looks good, it's worth tuning up before you record anything. Logic Pro has a built in tuner accessible from the small tuning fork icon in the control bar. Click it, play your guitar, and tune as needed.
If you're not hearing your guitar through your speakers or headphones at this point, check the input monitoring button, represented by a small "i" icon on your track. Whether you need to press this depends on your monitoring preferences, found under Logic Pro's Audio preferences in the General tab. If Software Monitoring is checked, you'll hear yourself as soon as you enable record on the track. If Input Monitoring Only is selected instead, you'll need to manually enable input monitoring on the track itself.
Loading Amp Designer
With a clean signal coming through, it's time to shape the tone. On your audio track, open the Audio Effects slot, go to Amps and Pedals, and select Amp Designer. Once loaded, playing a chord will immediately sound much closer to a real electric guitar running through an amplifier.
Amp Designer gives you a full set of amp controls to work with. You can increase the gain for more distortion, adjust the EQ to shape your tone, add reverb, or bring in tremolo or vibrato effects with adjustable speed and depth. You can also change the virtual microphone position on the amp, as well as the microphone type itself, switching between something like a dynamic mic, a different dynamic model, or a ribbon microphone, each producing a noticeably different character.
Amp Designer includes multiple amp models to choose from, each modelled after a different real world amplifier style. You can change the amp and the cabinet independently, letting you mix and match combinations that wouldn't necessarily exist in the real world, or you can change both together using the Model selector, which switches between paired amp and cabinet combinations while keeping your existing gain and tone settings intact. This makes it easy to compare how different amps sound under identical settings.
If you'd rather start from a preset than build a tone from scratch, click where it says Factory Default at the top of the plugin and browse the built in categories, ranging from clean tones through crunch, full distortion, and more experimental sounds. You can step through presets one at a time using the arrow buttons until you land on something close to what you're after.
Adding Pedals
Beyond the amp itself, Logic Pro includes a full virtual pedalboard you can load into your signal chain. To add it, go back to your channel strip and load the Pedalboard from the same Amps and Pedals menu, placing it directly above Amp Designer in the signal chain. This mirrors how you'd set things up with real hardware: guitar into pedalboard, pedalboard into amp.
The Pedalboard includes a wide range of effects to experiment with, including various fuzz and distortion pedals, a flanger, a phaser, tremolo, and even a rotary speaker simulation with adjustable speed, useful for organ style effects on guitar. Each pedal has its own on and off switch so you can toggle them individually, and you can load multiple pedals at once to build a more complex chain.
Using Channel Strip Presets
If building a tone from the ground up isn't what you're after, Logic Pro's Guitar or Bass track type gives you a fast way to get started. Create a new track using this type instead of a standard audio track, and Logic Pro will load an entire channel strip preset for you, typically including a noise gate, pedalboard, amp, EQ, and compression all at once.
These presets are organized by category, starting with clean tones and moving through crunch, distortion, and more experimental options. Selecting a different preset from the list swaps out the full chain in one click, giving you an instant tone to start from.
Presets aren't meant to be used exactly as they are, though. Once you've found a preset that's close to what you want, open the individual plugins within the channel strip, the amp, the pedalboard, the EQ, and adjust them to taste. A small tweak to the gain or reverb level, or switching on a drive pedal that was previously bypassed, can take a decent starting preset and turn it into exactly the tone you're after.
Low Latency Mode
If you're still noticing latency while recording, even with your buffer size adjusted, Logic Pro has a Low Latency Mode you can enable from the Record menu. When active, Logic Pro will automatically disable any plugins in your signal chain that are contributing significant latency, most commonly effects sends like reverb. You'll see the affected send appear in orange when this happens, indicating it's temporarily disabled while you record. As soon as you turn Low Latency Mode off, those effects are re-enabled automatically.
If there's a specific effect you want to keep active regardless of latency, right click that send and select Low Latency Safe. This tells Logic Pro not to disable it even while Low Latency Mode is on.
Recording Your Take
Once your tone is set and your levels are good, you're ready to record. If you're recording into an existing session and want to start at a specific point, such as bar five, set up a cycle region for the duration you want to record, and adjust your count-in setting under Record preferences so you get a bar or two of counted lead-in before recording begins.
If you play through a take and want to try again, you can simply record right over the same track. Logic Pro will automatically create a comp, keeping both takes available rather than overwriting your first attempt. From there, you can select which take to use for the whole section, or blend between them, taking the strongest parts of each performance and combining them into a single, cohesive comp. When switching between takes within a comp, try to make the edit point between chords or phrases rather than in the middle of one, since this creates a much smoother, less noticeable transition. Logic Pro will also add a small automatic crossfade at each edit point to help smooth things over.

There's no need to mic up a real amplifier, manage bleed from other instruments, or worry about disturbing anyone else in the house.
